Join us as we celebrate September -- one of our favorite months of the year in downtown Newark! Newark comes alive in the fall with the hustle and bustle of getting back to business after a long, hot summer. The promotions and activities that downtown offers combine with the convenience and charm of the hip and walkable downtown to enhance the pleasure of your downtown Newark experience.
There is so much going on downtown, it's hard, even for us, to keep track. September is host to Newark Community Day, the Fall Harvest Festival, and the Newark Film Festival.
We promise that this moth will be fun. It is filled with new energy, new faces and welcomes new places, but the same downtown Newark charm and traditions hold true.
Mark your calendar now for this busy month of events, so you do not miss a thing!
In addition, with UD back in session a whole host of cultural, athletic and educational opportunities are available that may not be listed here. You may wish to consult udel.edu for more information on them.
Sincerely,
Downtown Newark Partnership

Main Street Mile
Guest Bartenders Event
Thursday, September 9
5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Marriott at University of Delaware
400 David Hollowell Drive
Paco the K-9 police officer has recently been diagnosed with Bi-lateral Hip Dysplasia, which means he can be in a lot of pain if overly exerted. His retirement potential is high and right now there is not enough money in the Newark Police Department's K-9 Unit fund to purchase, train and house a new K-9.
The K-9 Unit relies on the support from the Main Street Mile fund raiser every year. Currently, the fund is at approximately $5,000. The annual Main Street Mile is important because it helps pay for continued training and certifications for the K-9 and its handler. With Paco's retirement looming, the fund raiser has become even more important since the initial cost of a K-9 is approximately $10,000 with an additional one time cost of about $1,000 for kennel set-up at the handler's home. Other incidentals cost approximately $1,500 a year. Veterinary care is donated by a local veterinarian.
The event is free and open to the public. Guests will get the chance to meet Paco and listen to some great music by the Gas House Gorillas - a primo jump blues band with an amazing rhythm section, awesome sax playing, fabulous guitar, a killer frontman, and fantastic songs. The band has the ability to cross over from jump blues to swing to rock and back again.
Familiar faces from Newark's community will be on hand serving drinks and doing what it takes to receive a generous tip since all tips go to the Newark Police K-9 Fund. Guest bartenders include:
Mayor Vance Funk
Newark City Councilman Paul Pomeroy
Lisa Hatfield, Newark Alderman
Bill Sullivan, General Manager, Courtyard Newark at UD
Bob Ashby, Owner of Deer Park Tavern
Fred McMinds, Owner of The Benefit Group LLC
Charlie Tomlinson, Associate Publisher, Delaware Today
Nic DeCaire, Owner of Fusion Fitness
Maureen Feeney-Roser, DNP Administrator and
Assistant Director of Planning and Development
The fourth annual Main Street Mile is hosted by the Downtown Newark Partnership (DNP) on Saturday, October 2nd at 8:00 a.m. The USAT&F and RRCA (Road Runners Club of America) sanctioned race, which benefits the Newark Police Department's K-9 Unit and the DNP begins at the McDonald's traffic circle on Main Street at 8:00 a.m. and finishes minutes later at the Deer Park Tavern. Elite runners from around the region compete for top prize money to be awarded to the first male to break 4:00 minute mile and the first female to break 4:40 minute mile.
The Elite Runner Division (males that run sub 5:20 minute mile and females that run sub 6:00 minute mile) winners qualify for cash prizes up to $300 awarded for first through tenth place. Other divisions' winners will receive trophies, medals and downtown gift certificates. Prizes will be awarded for the top male and female finishers in the following age categories: 13 & under; 14-19; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60-69 and 70+. There will also be a master's prize, which will be awarded to the top male and female runner in each category.
Runners are treated to a brunch hosted by the Deer Park Tavern at 108 West Main Street, immediately following the last race.
The Main Street Mile is sponsored by the Downtown Newark Partnership, Newark Police Department, Fusion Fitness Center, Deer Park Tavern, New Balance, Races2Run.com, and RRCA.
To register for the Main Street Mile, runners should visit www.fusionfitnesscenter.com or www.active.com. Pre-registration: $18 through September 29 - everyone who pre-registers receives a Main Street Mile t-shirt. Day of race registration will be held from 7:00 a.m.-7:45 a.m. at Fusion Fitness in Market East Plaza. Day of race registration: $22 after September 29 through day of race.

Newark Film Festival
September 23-30
Newark Cinema Center 3
In its sixth year, the Newark Film Festival will feature twenty independent documentary films nationally released and six local independent documentary films. Each of the local films will have a premier hosted by their filmmaker. The festival's opening night is September 23 and runs through September 30 at the Cinema Center 3 in the Newark Shopping Center. Several films drew record attendance last year and called for encore screenings at the Delaware Art Museum's Newark Film Festival: DAM Best of the Fest (Oct 1 - 3). More than 5,000 people saw at least one film during the film festival last year, so get your tickets right away. Tickets are $9.00 for the general admission and $7 for students and seniors. There will be $5 tickets available for off-peak morning and afternoon show times. An all-festival pass is $99 (or $75 if purchased before September 15).
